چکیده

This paper investigates the plastic deformation in mono-crystalline silicon under complex loading conditions. With the aid of various characterization techniques, it was found that the mechanism of plasticity in silicon is complex and depends on loading conditions, involving dislocations, phase transformations and chemical reactions. In general, plastic deformation in silicon is the coupled result of mechanical deformation controlled by the stress 3eld applied, chemical reaction determined by the external loading environment, and mechanical–chemical interaction governed by both the loading type and environment. Temperature rise accelerates the penetration of oxygen into silicon and reduces the critical stress of plastic yielding. When the chemical e4ect is avoided, the initiation of plasticity is enabled by octahedral shear stress but the further development of plastic deformation is in5uenced by hydrostatic stress. Plasticity of silicon in the form of phase transformations, e.g., from the diamond to amorphous or from the amorphous to bcc structures, is determined by loading history. ? 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. A new constitutive model for the phase transformations in mono-crystalline silicon

This paper presents a constitutive modelling technique for the multi-phase transformations in mono-crystalline silicon under complex loading. The development is based on the physical mechanisms observed experimentally and the incremental theory of plasticity. The stress–strain relationship is derived using closed loading/unloading surfaces, associated flow rule and isotropic hardening rule, to ...

In situ TEM study of deformation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transition in silicon

The mechanism responsible for deformation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transition (CAT) in silicon is still under considerable debate, owing to the absence of direct experimental evidence. Here we have devised a novel core/shell configuration to impose confinement on the sample to circumvent early cracking during uniaxial compression of submicron-sized Si pillars. This has enabled large pla...

A chemo-mechanical model of lithiation in silicon

We present a chemo-mechanical model to investigate the lithiation-induced phase transformation, morphological evolution, stress generation and fracture in crystalline silicon nanowires (c-SiNWs). The model couples lithium (Li) diffusion with elasto-plastic deformation in a three-dimensional (3D) setting. Several key features observed from recent transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies ar...

The plastic behaviour of silicon subjected to micro-indentation

Micro-indentation is widely used in evaluating the mechanical properties of ceramics. It is also an important measure in the study of machinability of brittle materials. Because of the complexity of interaction in the vicinity of the contact zone between the indenter and work material, an analytical or experimental method is unable to predict the detailed evolution process of deformation. With ...

Crystallographic orientation-dependent pattern replication in direct imprint of aluminum nanostructures

In the present work, we perform molecular dynamics simulations corroborated by experimental validations to elucidate the underlying deformation mechanisms of single-crystalline aluminum under direct imprint using a rigid silicon master. We investigate the influence of crystallographic orientation on the microscopic deformation behavior of the substrate materials and its correlation with the mac...
